Powering and controlling LED strip

LED strip runs on low-voltage DC, usually 24V, from a constant-voltage driver. Add up the strip's watts per foot times the length of every run on that driver, then divide by 0.8 so the driver never works above 80% of its rating. The power supply calculator does the math and flags runs that are too long for one feed.

Dimming has to be chosen as a system. The wall dimmer or control system and the driver must speak the same method: phase dimming (TRIAC or ELV) from a standard wall dimmer, 0-10V, DALI, or DMX for color and effects. A mismatch is the most common cause of flicker.

Place drivers where they can be reached and ventilated, as close to the run as practical. A long low-voltage feed loses voltage on the way, so a remote driver needs heavier wire.

Powering Your LED Strips

Common questions

What size power supply do I need for LED strip?

Multiply the strip's watts per foot by the total length on that supply, then divide by 0.8. For example, 30 ft of 4 W/ft strip is 120 W, so choose a driver of at least 150 W.

What is a Class 2 LED driver?

A power supply whose output is limited under the US National Electrical Code (Class 2 circuits) so the low-voltage side poses a low fire and shock risk. Class 2 output wiring can often be run with fewer restrictions, which is why many low-voltage lighting installs specify it.

Can I use a regular wall dimmer with LED strip?

Only with a driver designed for phase dimming (TRIAC or ELV), and only with a dimmer listed as compatible with it. A standard non-dimmable driver will flicker or fail on a wall dimmer.

Where should the LED driver be installed?

In an accessible, ventilated location, such as a cabinet, an attic access point or a ceiling space with a hatch, and as close to the strip as practical to limit voltage drop. Never seal a driver into a wall or ceiling where it cannot be reached.
