Specifying addressable strip
On addressable strip each LED — or each small group — carries its own driver IC and its own address, so the run can display a gradient, a chase, or a mapped image rather than one color at a time. That is the entire difference from RGB, and it changes what the installation needs around it.
Addressable runs are data runs. They need a controller that speaks the strip's protocol, a clean signal path, and attention to where the data starts; signal integrity, not power, usually sets the practical run length. Long runs need repeaters or splitting into segments driven in parallel.
Pixel pitch decides the resolution of anything you display. Coarse pitch is fine for a color wash along a soffit and useless for text or video; the finer the pitch, the more data and power the same length consumes.
Common questions
What is addressable LED strip?
A strip where small groups of LEDs, called pixels, each have their own control chip. A controller can set every pixel to a different color and brightness, which makes chases, gradients and moving effects possible. A standard RGB strip changes color along its whole length at once.
What is the difference between SPI and DMX addressable control?
With SPI, a pixel controller sends data straight down the strip, which is simple and suits shorter runs near the controller. DMX (or Art-Net over a network) suits large installations and lighting consoles, using decoders close to the strip.
Do addressable strips need a special controller?
Yes. The controller has to speak the strip's pixel protocol. Keep the data run from controller to first pixel short, and plan power feeds along long runs, as for any strip.
